Mary Agilo' Story

Mary Agilo

Agilo Mary is a widow of HIV and she is also infected herself. Her husband died of AIDS in 2003. Mary went to school up to primary six so she has have no back up skills to do “a proper” work.

Year 2006 on December 7th she was registered as a beader in Caring Hands.

Mary was born in northern Uganda, but lives now in Kampala in area called Kinawataka in a single room house with her five children and two nephews who are orphans. Mary’s brother Egwor Ciprian and his wife Apio Jamilla died of HIV a few years ago leaving their two sons to her, as there was nobody else to take care of them except her. Here is little bit details about Mary’s family:

  1. Arach Juliet is her daughter who was born in 1992

  2. Amoll Lillian is her daughter who was born in 1994

  3. Okello Geoffrey is her son who was born in 1996

  4. Acong Proscovia is her daughter who was born in 1998

  5. Lubanga-kene Ambros is her son who was born in 2005

  6. Egwor Emma is her brother’s son who is now 6 years old

  7. Ogweng Hassan is her brother’s son who is now 8 years old

When Mary first came to Caring Hands, she had been living in a mud house with a mud floor no electricity but now through making beads she was able to move in a house with better conditions like cemented floor though still no electricity. Much as Mary has required improvement in her health and living conditions, the one rented room is too small for the whole of the family of eight.

She faces the challenge of rent, daily food, school fees and a medical care. She is still quite often sick due to the presence of the virus and has been admitted to hospital several times because of a serious headache and problems in lungs. Through Caring Hands they got a Family Sponsor from Finland, so that covers the school fees to orphan boys and some medical bills.
