Moses Katunda - Seasonal Worker

MOSES KATUNDA

It was in the year 2007 that the last hope left for this young man when he lost his mother to HIV. Born in 1989, Moses had lost his dad 10 years before and there he was without a mother either.

With a little sister and a little brother to take care of, Moses had no option but to grow into a dad there and then. But that was not all. There was also his nephew that had been left in the care of his mom at 3months when its mother (Moses’ sister) remarried in Nairobi.

And then there were the greedy neighbors too, who were determined to do all they could, to grab the little piece of land that had belonged to his mother. Moses had no proof that the land belonged to his family and yet it was here that they lived in a single room. They had no toilets, electricity, water, nor food or even clothing. They often got sick and yet they could not afford medication.

It was in this state that Caring Hands met Moses and gave him a job. Caring Hands also constructed a pit latrine for them. Soon, Moses followed up on the land title using savings he had made from his job at Caring Hands and began building another house for the family.

Meanwhile Moses was in the final stages of giving up his nephew for adoption when his sister returned from Nairobi. She had not known of his mother’s death and of the court proceedings to adopt her son. She took her son with her and this to Moses was great relief.

Moses is now enrolling for a diploma in Information Technology so he can finish school fast and take more proper care of his brother and sister.

He still is challenged with their feeding, school requirements, water and electricity. But he is grateful and happy that all three are in school and have a hope for a future.
